A hysteroscopy means that the doctor examines the inside of the uterus. It can be done before an assisted fertilization to examine whether the uterus is normal in shape and size. Hysteroscopy may also be appropriate to investigate bleeding, spiral removal and investigation of uterine cancer.
A hysteroscopy may be appropriate before fertility treatment. Usually there is nothing to be found, but in some people one finds polyps or adhesions. If an embryo attaches in them, there is often not enough circulation and one does not become pregnant.
It is a simple examination that is carried out in a regular gynecologist's chair and without any type of anesthesia. The scope, which is only 3.5mm, is inserted through the cervical canal and into the uterine cavity. There is a video camera attached to the scope so the doctor can see the inside of the uterus on screen. It is completely painless for the patient. The examination takes only a few minutes. If you find mucosal growths (polyps), these can be removed there and then.
This is a common hysteroscopy in which the doctor examines only the inside of the uterine cavity.
When the doctor passes instruments through the hysteroscope to do operations in the uterine cavity itself, it is called surgical hysteroscopy.
It is also possible to do a so-called “scratching” of the endometrium by a hysteroscopy. This can increase the chance of pregnancy.
