If you are undergoing IVF treatment, you may have heard of a long and a short type of pre-treatment before egg extraction. What exactly is the difference, and what is most used today? Tone comes with some personal experiences.
IVF fertility treatment - step by step
The first step is usually the fertility check. Your doctor will review your medical history together with you. The woman has a gynecological examination of the uterus and ultrasound of the ovaries. In some cases, it is also necessary to examine fallopian tube function. In the man, we do a sperm analysis. The doctor will take samples of hormones and chromosomes if necessary. The results are ready the same day.
Onset can occur as quickly as 1-4 weeks after initial review with a doctor and nurse. The woman starts with hormonal stimulation on day 1 of menstruation. From the 6th day of stimulation, the woman takes a daily drug to prevent ovulation. After 9 days of stimulation, there is ultrasound. Then we see how many eggs are in ripening and which day is best for egg extraction
Egg withdrawal is between 12-15 days after onset. We take out the eggs and store them in Petri dishes. To ensure the best possible natural fertilization, we also process semen sample.
After fertilization, our goal is one or more fine embryo. To ensure the best possible results, we monitor the development in a digital incubator (Embryoscope, Eeva, Geri). On day 1 after fertilization, we will call you with an update on the progress.
Return of the embryo we do 2-5 days after egg retrieval. We put back the embryo that shows the best development. Often we have several good embryos to choose from. These can be frozen for later return if necessary.
The big day! 14 days after realisation, take a normal pregnancy test at home and let us know the result.

You contact us via the patient portal on the day the woman gets her period so that we can confirm the start of the different medications. She first starts with a nasal spray. The nasal spray resets the body's natural hormone production ahead of the hormone treatment that is in the next step.
Approximately 20 days after starting nasal sprays, hormonal stimulation begins. 10 days after starting with hormones, we schedule ultrasound. Then we see how many eggs are in ripening and which day is best for egg retrieval. You will also be told about further stimulation and when you need to take an ovulation syringe.
