It is said that being overweight affects the chance of achieving pregnancy after IVF and furthermore that the chance is high that an eventual pregnancy will end in miscarriage. In addition, it is claimed that pregnancy carries great risks for the mother and child. But is this true?
Many clinics do not offer treatment to women with a BMI over 30.
The vast majority of people who are obese spontaneously become pregnant and have perfectly normal pregnancies. It is also not observed that obesity leads to reduced sperm quality in men. However, increased weight makes for a greater likelihood of developing PCOS. This is a condition in which the maturation of eggs is affected, and therefore ovulation does not occur. PCOS is the most common cause of missed pregnancy in women. Fortunately, this condition is one of the easier ones to be able to treat.

When it comes to weight, only those with a very low BMI show a reduced chance of success with IVF treatment. The figures show that the chance of pregnancy actually rises with increasing BMI. There is also no increased risk of abortion.
What about the pregnancies? The vast majority have normal pregnancies and births, but one sees an increased incidence of gestational induced diabetes.
