Young mother carries child on her back playfully

Clinic Hausken offers couples assisted fertilization with egg donation. Following amendments to the Biotechnology Act, it is now possible for those who do not have eggs to have children with egg donation. Currently, the law states that at least one of the parties must be known. In practical terms, it means that both heterosexual couples and lesbian couples can receive assisted fertilization with egg donation. Heterophilic couples can be helped to conceive with egg donation if the man's sperm is used to fertilise the donated eggs. Lesbian couples can do so-called self-donation in which one woman receives donated egg from her partner and the egg is fertilized with unknown sperm donor.

Assisted fertilization and IVF with egg donation give good results.

International studies and experiences show that IVF treatment with donated eggs has very good results. Many people can show as good results with egg donation as traditional IVF treatment. Clinic Hausken expects to come to the same conclusion in the time ahead.

Why is egg donation necessary for some couples?

There are several reasons that make egg donation a possible choice for couples. Some women don't produce eggs or eggs that aren't sustainable enough. There may also be cases where it is not possible or advisable to use their own eggs due to genetic reasons. Age is also a cause. Women's fertility naturally declines with increasing age and many people discover that they come relatively early in menopause. For these women, egg donation can be a good solution. Although only the father is the genetic parent, many women feel that egg donation is very positive since they themselves have carried the child.

How does fertility treatment with egg donation take place?

The fertility check is usually the first step when couples come to Klinikk Hausken. The examination gives the doctor the opportunity to get an overview of the situation and the couple gets to meet both doctor and nurse. We attach great importance to good communication and safety for everyone who comes to us. The fertility check lays a good foundation for this.

If one chooses to go ahead, the man can hand over semen samples that are frozen. The doctor makes a careful assessment and selects eggs from a suitable donor that are similar in appearance to the woman. There are strict criteria for who can become an egg donor in Norway. Among other things, the donor must be between 25-35 years of age and have good mental and physical health.

The eggs come from Klinikk Hausken's own egg banks or external egg banks in the Nordic countries. The eggs are thawed and fertilized at the clinic with the sperm sample that the man delivered early.

For many years, Klinikk Hausken has fertilized eggs in the laboratory under stable conditions. Experienced embryologists use, among other things, an incubator and an embryoscope with video surveillance. The embryologist can then choose the ones that are most suitable. After a few days in the incubator, one knows how many embryos can be used and, together with the doctor, the couple can plan stimulation before the embryo is implanted in the uterus.

Hormone stimulation is an important step that gets the uterus ready for insertion. After a few days of stimulation, an ultrasound of the uterus is done. If the doctor sees that everything is in order, the embryo reset itself can be planned. One is given a date for insertion and nurse informs the couple of medication and practical details.

The day of insertion is always exciting for the couple. After observation in the embryoscope, the embryologist selects the best embryo that is then implanted in the woman's uterus. This is a simple procedure that most women experience as completely painless. The embryo can now attach itself, and goes all that normally it will develop as in a normal fertilization.

After insertion, we recommend having as normal a daily life as possible. Again, the nurse will provide thorough information about details, and you can get answers via the patient portal of Klinikk Hausken.

Of course, there are deadlines to take a pregnancy test after a few days, but we recommend waiting for 14 days. Those who get a positive test result are pregnant and should have another ultrasound examination. Those who got one got a negative result then have to consider what they want to do. It is quite common to have to try 2-3 times, so do not lose hope if you get a negative result the first time. The embryologist has a good overview of other embryos lying on the freezer, and together with the doctor you can plan a new trial when the time is ripe for it.
