ICSI means that the egg is injected with a carefully selected sperm cell and then placed in an incubator. It is an assisted fertilization technique used to treat infertility, the cause of which is reduced sperm quality.

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a technique in which a sperm cell is injected directly into the egg to fertilize it. The method is applicable when there is a male factor or in the absence of fertilization where it is assumed that this is due to the sperm.

Why is ICSI used as part of assisted fertilization?

The method is usually used when there are problems with the man's sperm quality. ICSI can be used if there are few or no motile sperm, if there are many dead sperm, or if there is another reason why the eggs are not fertilized. The method can also be used when the female has a low number of eggs and other methods have not been successful.

What is ICSI microinjection?

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection, is the injection of a carefully selected sperm cell into one egg. The method can be used in cases of low sperm quality or motility.

What are the advantages of the method?

One of the biggest advantages of the method is that it can help couples who have difficulty conceiving, such as couples who struggle with their husband's sperm quality. The technique allows the man to overcome sperm quality problems and so that the possibility of a successful pregnancy increases.

ICSI Success Rates and Probability?

ICSI has been shown to increase the likelihood of pregnancy, and there are some studies that have shown that the success rate is higher than with other treatments. In some cases, the method can increase the likelihood of pregnancy to up to 50%.

How is ICSI treatment performed?

ICSI treatment starts with the sperm sample delivered from the man being cleaned and washed. This process leaves one with those sperm cells that have good motility. These are also the ones with the highest probability of being normal. Using a microscope, you then select the sperm that you want to use to fertilize the eggs. The treatment continues with the selected sperm then injected directly into the egg. This method is called microinjection.

Are there risks involved with the treatment?

No, there is a small risk involved with ICSI processing itself. The results, of course, depend on the quality of the eggs. If egg quality is poor then ICSI will not create better embryo quality. It is primarily a method to help the sperm so that one achieves fertilization. ICSI can also damage the eggs. This makes it important that you choose this method only where conditions dictate that the method will increase the chance of pregnancy.

What is ICSI? In today's episode, therapist Tone Bråten and doctor Jon Hausken talk about ICSI.

What is best of IVF and ICSI?

The best option will depend on what is the cause of the missed pregnancy. For some, IVF may be the best option, while others may benefit from ICSI. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages that must be considered before making a choice.

How many ICSI trials do you have to have?

There are many things that can affect how many attempts one needs. Some of these are the woman's age, the patient's medical history and overall health, the quality of eggs and sperm, and ovulation. Some patients become pregnant during the first attempt, others may need several attempts before they are successful.

What is the difference between IVF treatments and ICSI?

The big difference between IVF and ICSI is that in IVF, one allows the sperm to create fertilization of the eggs themselves, while in ICSI it is the embryologists who select the best sperm and inject the egg directly. Microinjection is therefore a good option for couples who struggle with their man's sperm quality, or for couples who have tried other treatments and failed.
